Most homeowners don’t pay any attention to their refrigerators, beyond the fact that the milk is running low. Believe us, there is a lot more to a refrigerator than meets the eye. Things that can ultimately end up saving you a lot of money in the long run.
The condenser is one of the most important parts of your refrigerator. A healthy condenser means a healthy fridge, and a healthy fridge means fewer repair visits and overall peace of mind. There are many different layouts of condensers in a refrigerator. Some are functioning directly at the front of the unit behind the kick plate. While others are quietly hidden behind the refrigerator next to the compressor. Even to date, some of the units these days have hanging condensers, where the coils are spread and expanded all along the back side of the refrigerator.
In any case, keeping these coils clean every 6 months to a year is essential for your refrigerators long life. If your condenser is located in the front behind the kick plate, you can start by simply removing the kick plate cover and exposing the condenser coils behind it. Once in view, use either a vacuum cleaner hose extension or common household dust pad to remove the years of dust build up on the coils. The same technique applies to condensers which are tucked away next to the compressor in the back. Remove the back cover and locate the black condenser coils, which are usually to the right of the compressor. For condensers hanging on the back of the refrigerator unit, simply use a duster or a damp cloth and remove any dust or debris.
Using these techniques once or twice during the year, will help ensure that your compressor runs cool and efficiently. You will almost immediately notice that your fridge seems a little colder than it was and any fluctuations in temperature you noticed before, may also go back to normal.
